What is Projection of a Line?
In Engineering Graphics, a line is defined by its true length and its inclinations with reference to the Horizontal Plane (HP) and Vertical Plane (VP).
The process of representing a line on a 2D drawing sheet using its front view and top view is called the projection of a line.
These projections help us understand the actual position, orientation, and length of the line in 3D space.
Reference Planes Used in Projection
- Horizontal Plane (HP): Plane on which the top view is projected
- Vertical Plane (VP): Plane on which the front view is projected
The intersection of HP and VP forms the XY reference line.
Types of Projection of Lines
Depending on the orientation of the line with respect to HP and VP, projection of lines is classified into the following cases:
1. Line Parallel to Both HP and VP
- True length appears in both views
- Projections are parallel to XY line
- Simplest case
2. Line Perpendicular to HP and Parallel to VP
- Front view shows true length
- Top view reduces to a point
3. Line Perpendicular to VP and Parallel to HP
- Top view shows true length
- Front view reduces to a point
4. Line Inclined to HP and Parallel to VP
- Front view shows true length
- Top view is shorter than true length
5. Line Inclined to VP and Parallel to HP
- Top view shows true length
- Front view is shorter than true length
6. Line Inclined to Both HP and VP
- Neither view shows true length directly
- Special methods like rotating line method or auxiliary plane method are used
This is the most important case for exams.
